FMBC SCHOLARSHIP SUBMITTAL FORMS

It's that time of year again - as most of you know, FMBC offers scholarships to four-year band and guard members. In order to be eligible, students must be four-year band (or guard) members, and plan to pursue further education in music or the performing arts. The FMBC Board of Directors makes the choices based on the information provided on the submittal form. The submittal MUST come from a Florida Band Director whose band is participating in FMBC Semi-Finals. Directors, please use the submittal forms below;

TIMBER CREEK MARCHING ARTS FESTIVAL

This past weekend, members of our home office staff attended the Timber Creek Marching Arts Invitational. We can clearly see that many Florida bands are going to present remarkable and creative shows at Semi-Finals this year. Wow.

Timber Creek is one of the many FMBC Shows that uses a full clinic format. After each band performs, the entire band goes directly to the gym or assigned clinic room, where they view their performance on video, and a nationally recognized clinician helps show them what is good and what still needs work. We attended one of the clinics this year and were very impressed with how the clinician clearly explained to the performers how their understanding of the show and their enthusiasm for their performance communicated (or did not communicate) to the audience. The kids were very attentive and the clinic was inspiring. This is a great format for an FMBC Regional.

The show started with South Sumter, the sole 1A entry. They placed a large tarp on the field which defined the size of their stage, and proceeded to wow the audience with a presentation based on what they called 'The Grid.'

In 2A Oak Ridge's presentation of 'Images of War' was judged first in class, narrowly outscoring St. Cloud's staging of the classic fairy tale, 'Little Red Riding Hood' in a show they called 'Deceived.' Northeast's Scarlett Regiment was a close third with their jazz oriented 'Sweet Dreams' show.

There were no 3A bands at Timber Creek, but the 4A battle between two outstanding bands more than made up for it as Cypress Bay's well executed and powerful salute to 'Strength and Honor,' entitled 'A Hero Will Rise' barely outscored the East River's Falcon Vanguard's presentation of the 'Locked Room, a' show that featured a mysterious room that came to life with the help of highest scoring color guard of the day.

In 5A, Cypress Creek's precise and haunting performance of 'Wanderlust' brought the crowd to their feet as they managed to outscore a very solid performance of the 'Nautical Voyage' by tbe Eau Gallie Commodores. Cypress Creek was the high scoring band of the day with an 86.10, well into the FMBC 'Distinguished' Category.

Every week the improvement in performance is remarkable. As we said last week, we can hardly wait till FMBC Finals day!! We hope you can be there too!

ATTENTION FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOL
& INDEPENDENT DRUM LINES!

There is a special event just for you now in the final planning stages! FMBC is working with our strategic partner, DCI, to host an all-new event for us - the first FMBC-DCI 'Battle at the Beach' Drum Line Competition. The event will be held at the 'Postcard Inn on the Beach,' located due west of the Tropicana Dome on St. Petersburg Beach on November 21st 2014, the evening before FMBC Semi-Finals and Finals. Although the concept is not new, this specific 'Drum Line Battle' program was designed and developed by DCI as a part of their new 'SoundSport/Drum Line Battle' program series. You can view the Rules at the DCI Drum Line Battle Website and you can register here. Drumlines must have 2 - 30 members, and all equipment must be carried (no grounded percussion). Competing groups perform head-to-head, each in a 12 meter (40 ft) square zone, separated from their competitor by a 2 meter neutral area. Performance time must be between 1-1/2 and 2 minutes. Competitive divisions will be determined based on the groups who enter. Although this is a competitive event, DCI tells us that the adjudication is heavily weighted towards audience entertainment! More information is available in Issue number 2 of our 2014 newsletter.

EVALUATION AND CLINIC BY SEMI-FINALS JUDGES
A WEEK BEFORE FINALS!!
This year and this year only, FMBC has a special arrangement with the Central States Judges Association and Lely High School. Lely has agreed to host a show one week before finals - bands cannot advance their seeding at this show, but they can have the opportunity to perform for an evaluation AND CLINIC by FMBC Semi-Finals judges in a contest setting on an astro-turf field. The judges and clinicians were chosen at random from the four semi-finals judging panels. Lely is located in Naples Florida. Click here for details.

FMBC 2014 BAND REGISTRATION

The FMBC 2014 Band Registration Form is available on line. Click HERE to Register your band to participate in FMBC 2014 Semi-Finals! Bands that have already registered need to complete an information form for the announcer. You can access a copy of the form here.

Remember that performance order is now heavily dependent on the date of your registration! (along with your score at an FMBC Regional Show).

A tip from one of the early registration bands - when you enter your contact phone number on the entry form, use dashes between the area code and the number (xxx-xxx-xxxx). Don't leave the dashes out or you may get an error message when you try to submit the form.

As in the past, there are two levels of Registration, Standard Registration or Premium Registration - you can choose which ever works best for your band. If your band moves on to Finals, you will receive either 20 wristbands (standard) or 30 wristbands (premium) for Finals. All other personnel needing to enter any gate will need to purchase entrance wristbands. The details are below;
